Turning Play Dough Into Music
Exhibition

KlingDing is an interactive installation where play dough becomes a musical instrument. Users shape the dough by hand, with its length and width determining the duration and pitch of the sound. Each color corresponds to a unique instrument, creating a playful and creative way to explore music.

The Motivation
We set out to make music theory fun and hands-on for kids and playful adults, seeking a tactile, intuitive, and controllable approach.
The Motivation
We set out to make music theory fun and hands-on for kids and playful adults, seeking a tactile, intuitive, and controllable approach.
The Idea
Inspired by Lego and a love for creative constraints, we re-discovered play dough, the ultimate flexible, familiar material. We transformed it into an interactive art installation that let people shape sounds with their hands.
A camera detects the play dough's shape and translates it into sounds: color determines the instrument, bolder shapes create deeper pitches, smaller shapes produce higher pitches, and the shape's length defines the sound's duration.
A projector displays the playhead and highlights the playable area, while LEDs mirror the color of the play dough. A button allows users to play or pause the experience.
